August 2005 - Formed in December 1997, Maltacom plc is the leading telecommunications operator for the islands of Malta, Comino and Gozo. The company provides telecommunications services to the Maltese population of close to 400,000 people and 1.2m annual tourists.

Redwood has recently completed a major system upgrade and expansion programme for Maltacom's Easyline prepaid services product. This included an upgrade to Redwood's latest DNX-1200 SS7 softswitching platform. When launched, Easyline provided what is believed to be Europe 's first fixed-line subscriber dial tone service. The Easyline brand umbrellas a number of prepaid services, including prepaid calling card services for visitors to the islands.

The Easyline domestic subscriber base has seen substantial growth since the DNX system was first installed. The service is now used by over 10% of Maltacom's subscribers and the number of users is consistently rising each month. Major attractions include the real-time billing aspect of Easyline, which allows customers to easily understand and manage their telecoms spend, and additionally, the service has allowed the Easyline customers to avoid paying line rental charges, due to the cash flow advantages provided by prepaid billing.

Increased Capacity and Resilience

To cope with the continued service growth, the latest expansion has increased the total system capacity by 33%. Additional hardware and software resilience has been introduced to further improve quality of service to the user base.

Integration with VoIP Networks

Maltacom is also using the Redwood platform to perform the charging related to Maltacom's VoIP service. Integration with the VoIP network has allowed Maltacom to provide its subscribers with the ability to make significantly cheaper international calls.

Enhanced Prepaid Features

Additionally, features from Redwood's latest RedRouter™ billing application have been incorporated into the Easyline service, such as system partitioning and web management, to allow simple secure management of the system.
